Makeover project to transform Fuente Osmeña into a heritage avenue
CEBU CITY, Cebu, Philippines – The Super Beautification project of the Cebu City government, which aims to transform the city's main road into a heritage avenue, is starting to become a reality with the launch and blessing of the first completed sidewalk along Fuente Osmeña Boulevard.
Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama together with Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia officially launched the completed part of the stretch, located in front of the new BDO building, with Msgr. Roberto Alesna performing the blessing rites.
The Super Beautification Council, spearheaded by philanthropist Mariquita Salimbangon-Yeung, sister of fourth district Rep. Benhur Salimbangon, was created to beautify the major thoroughfares of the city, especially the stretch of Osmeña Boulevard.
At least nine Capitol contractors have signified interest to help in the beautification work to be done on the one-kilometer stretch of Osmeña Boulevard from the Capitol building to Fuente Osmeña junction. The contractors said they will shoulder expenses for the project.
The move of the contractors to support the project of Cebu City came after Garcia sought their assistance for the beautification of the one-kilometer stretch as part of the program of the City Government to transform the main road into a heritage avenue.
To support the City Government, Capitol agreed to take care of the beautification of Capitol- Fuente stretch and the contractors agreed to do the work free of charge, Garcia said.
The Cebu governor said there is no need to use government resources as the funds needed will be raised “in a most creative and innovative manner.”
According to Garcia, when she met the contractors, they were immediately assigned respective blocks on which their efforts would undertake civil works, improvement of gutters and other needed work in accordance with specifications designed by the committee.
