MARIVELES, Bataan, Philippines — The provincial government and the PNP provincial police office have further intensified their campaign against illegal cutting of logs in an apparent bid to save the remaining forests of Bataan.

And even the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, an special investigative body of the PNP, headed by Chief Inspector Rogarth B. Campo, provincial officer, has also launched special operation against what he called "environmental terrorists," running after illegal loggers and illegal fishers in Bataan.

As this developed, two suspected illegal loggers were caught in the act over the weekend by the policemen along the forested areas of Sitio Lilimbin, barangay Camaya, this town.

Reports received by Sr. Supt. Arnold D. Gunnacao, Bataan police director, showed that suspected illegal loggers identified as Jimmy Cometa and Freddie Monsanto, both of Camaya, were then cutting forest trees using improvised saw (lagaring hapon) when the policemen under Supt. Joel Tampis suddenly arrived and caught them.

Confiscated from them were the freshly cut 16 pieces of hard wood and chain saw.

Gunnacao said that charges of violating P.D. 705 will be filed Wednesday against the suspects before the Provincial Prosecutors’ office.

Governor Tet Garcia has led the campaign against illegal logging in the province to protect the reaming forest areas of Bataan. Garcia had even bought a helicopter to run after illegal loggers and fishers.

Meanwhile, a hotel security guard is being hunted by the Balanga police after he allegedly shot dead a room boy of the hotel.

Supt. Bong Buslig, Jr., chief of police of Balanga PNP station, said that Roberto Vidal shot dead the unidentified room boy after a heated argument inside the Elison Hotel where they were both employed.
