Tourism advocacy
TAGUN CITY (PIA) – The Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) together with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Philippines are again up for some climate change development efforts starting this month.
As the island city braces for an increased influx of local and foreign tourists, being the ultimate destination for a lot of people, IGACOS makes sure that the marine and coastal resources of the island will be protected and its people mobilized to do such duty themselves.
IGACOS, in partnership with WWF Philippines and other government agencies and private sectors, started the process of implementing climate change adaptation strategies in the coming months, which is also being supported by Rep. Antonio F. Lagdameo Jr. (2nd District, Davao del Norte) who loves supporting environmental projects.
This was disclosed during the project presentation held recently at the IGACOS City Hall with City Mayor Aniano Antalan and City Administrator Cleto B. Gales Jr. heading the representatives from the local government unit.
The WWF was represented by its trustee former Ms. Universe Margie Moran-Floirendo, vice president for programs Joel Palma, James D. Lumanog, and Luz Baslinas.
“This project is very timely and a lot of people will be coming in to enjoy IGACOS and everything it has to offer to the public. These very people who love IGACOS should learn how to take care of it especially its marine and coastal resources so that sustainability will continue and that the island will still remain as a beautiful tourist spot for future generations,” said Moran-Floirendo.
The project aims to increase resilience of coastal ecosystems, reduce disaster risks brought about by the effects of climate change, while maintaining provision of environmental goods and services to the community.
