Filipino seafarers to be honored
ILOILO, Iloilo, Philippines (PIA) –- Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) Region 6 has scheduled activities marking June 25 as a special day recognizing Filipino seafarers for their invaluable contribution to national development per Proclamation No. 183 issued by President Benigno S. Aquino III.
On that day, a walk for a cause for Filipino seafarers, in cooperation with Women in Maritime Philippines (WIMAPHIL), and a wreath-laying activity at the Muelle Loney street along the Iloilo River will highlight the event after a 6 a.m. holy mass at San Jose Church.
Said walk for a cause will end at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol grounds, followed by a Hataw and a short program.
In the afternoon of June 25, a Children Story Book Telling and a Seafarers Wives Symposium “Ako si Nanay, Ako si Tatay” will be held at SM City-Iloilo.
Meanwhile, MARINA is also organizing activities celebrating June as Environment month.
Tuesday, a lecture on Tsunami and Tornadoes and a film showing were held at maritime schools here.
Wednesday, MARINA will hold a River Clean-Up followed by a Coastal Clean-Up on June 23 also in cooperation with WIMAPHIL and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
It will be recalled that the Philippines is the world's leading supplier of ship crew men, with about an estimated 350,000 sailors, or about a fifth of the world's seafarers, manning different type of vessels worldwide currently.
