Quezon schools to plant vegetables

LUCENA CITY, Quezon, Philippines — The Quezon provincial government launched over the weekend the second season of “Gulayan sa Paarlan,” a vegetable gardening program implemented in public elementary schools in the province.

Dubbed as “Developing Agriculture through Vegetable Production Integration Drive in School (DAVIDS), the launching of Season 2 of the program and awarding rites for winners of Season 1 of the program was held at the Queen Margarette Hotel last Saturday afternoon.

Quezon Governor David C. Suarez said that he expects the second season of the project to tap all public elementary schools.

Suarez said the program aims to instill the value of agricultural development for food sufficiency in the province and to educate the pupils at their young age the benefits of eating vegetables.

The said program is conducted in the form of a contest in which schools with the best vegetable gardens receive prizes worth a total of P1 million in form of projects.

Winners of Gulayan sa Paaralan Season 1 were Abuyon Elementary School in San Narciso; San Roque Elementary School in Calauag, and Sampaloc National High School.
