UP Film Institute thesis wins in Bangkok filmfest

MANILA, Philippines — Ricochet, an undergraduate thesis of UP Film Institute student Chad Angelic Cabigon, won the Bronze Award at the 2nd Bangkok International Student Film Festival in Bangkok, Thailand recently.

’’Ricochet,’’ a 17-minute short film, tells the story of a man reflecting on the unexpected consequences of a murder he commits. It stars Joem Bascon, Jamieson Tracy Lee, and Juan Miguel Severo. Cabigon is both writer and director of the film, with Joenathann Alandy as producer.

Prior to the Bangkok festival, Cabigon’s film was screened at the 2nd West Virginia Mountaineer Short Film Festival. It also won awards for directing and editing (for Cabigon and Jerome Morales) at the 8th Indie Un-Film, Ateneo Video Open 12 and the 7th PWU Art Film Festival.

Pefianco Elem School high in NAT test results

The Schools Division of Antique (DepED) recently released the results of the National Achievement Test (NAT) for the school year 2010-2011 for the District of San Jose, Antique.

The first four schools that scored the highest average percentage in Filipino, Mathematics, English, Science and Hekasi (Geography, History and Social Studies) are the Canuto B. Pefianco Sr. Elementary School, Brgy. Madrangka – 90.11 percent; Antique SPED Center, Central Elementary School – 81.84 percent; San Fernando Elementary School – 78.33 percent; and Tubudan-Cansadan Elementary School – 78.03 percent.

Pefianco Elementary School also scored top grades in the following subjects: Filipino – 88.12 percent; Mathematics – 94.21 percent; English – 84.7 percent; Science – 91.75 percent; and Hekasi – 91.45 percent. The same school topped in the NAT exams for the province of Antique where 426 elementary schools participated.

In 2005, Pefianco Elementary School received donations from Manila consisting of 25 computers, three long telescopes, 30 microscopes, three TVs with DVD players, two overhead projectors and other laboratory facilities used in science.

The school principal is Marne Palencia and the district supervisor of San Jose is Andrea Telesforo.

Workshop on digital photography set

Budding photographers, enthusiasts, and hobbyists are invited to hone their photography skills in the Digital Photography 101 workshop on July 16 and 23 at 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Filipinas Heritage Library, Makati Avenue, Ayala Triangle, Makati City (across the Peninsula Manila).

This class, which combines theoretical techniques with practical skills, will also enable participants to produce memorable photographs. They will learn not only how to set up a digital camera but also learn the basics of composition, perspective and design.

A photo shoot on July 17 is meant to encourage participants to apply concepts learned in class. A critiquing session will also be held for participants to give and receive constructive feedback on their work.
