DTI secretary to open 'diskwento caravan', keynote Cebu economic forum

CONSOLACION, Cebu, Philippines — Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Gregory Domingo will be in Cebu this Thursday, July 21, to open the agency’s “diskwento caravan,” and launch its computer donation program. He will, likewise be the keynote speaker in the economic forum and general membership meeting of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry to be held at the Marriott Hotel, this city

The so-called “diskwento caravan” will be at 8:30 a.m. in Consolacion town, and will be attended by manufacturers of school supplies, processed food and other basic commodities, who will later be selling their items at discounted prices. The caravan is a DTI initiative aimed at helping consumers save money by not necessarily competing with private establishments.

To be launched at the Mandaue City Science High School at 10 a.m. will be the Personal Computers for Public High Schools (PCPS) project. Now on its fourth phase, the project provides computer sets and peripherals as well as training on basic computer operation, troubleshooting and computer maintenance to public high schools in the country not able to receive computer grants from other institutions.

Last month, the DTI Secretary had also led in the giving of 11 personal computer (PC) sets to 39 public high schools in Bohol.

The PCPS 4, which has a P320 million aid from the Japanese government, will be rolling out 8,525 PCs among identified public high-schools in the country which are not recipients of similar other grants from other organizations.

Of the total PCs distributed, 1,386 were given to Central Visayas, including 46 public high schools each in Negros Occidental and Cebu provinces and two schools in Siquijor.
