DoST-11 optimistic on use of cooking oil as aircraft fuel

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (PNA) – The Region 11 office of the Department of Science and Technology (DoST-11) here and an inventor from this city are excited to see bright prospects in their partnership for aircraft use of biofuel made from used cooking oil.

DoST-11 Director Dr. Anthony Sales said the recent pronouncement of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines regarding their Amsterdam-Paris flights to be run by biofuel made from used cooking oil will eventually increase the demand.

Sales said the DoST-11 funded the cost of fabrication of the equipment and provided a working capital for the plant that inventor Emiliano F. Quintol pursues for his EFQ Biofuel – said to be derived from used cooking oil.

He said the EFQ Biofuel is used as an additive to diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to improve performance of vehicle and reduce fuel consumption.

Sales said the DoST through the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI) supported Quintol’s invention.

Since its test run in April, 2010, it has produced some two million vials of biofuel per month at 30 milliliter per vial.

Used cooking oil, where EFQ Biofuel is being derived, is usually considered as waste.

The DoST-11 said that through Quintol’s invention, this can be recycled and processed safely and efficiently to save on fossil fuel and lessen waste that pollutes the environment.

Sales said the biofuel produced by Quintol is being tapped by taxi operators and local government units (LGUs) even as he said that Quintol is lobbying with various national government agencies to try his EFQ Biofuel.

If the industry will eventually support the product, Quintol needs to further increase his supply in order to meet the needs of the market, Sales said.

According to Sales, the DoST is continuously supporting this kind of invention as the department enjoins members of the Davao Inventors Association (DIA), the Southern Mindanao Society (SMIS), the Mindanao Inventors
Federation, Inc. (MIFI), and the Filipino Inventors Society (FIS) to support the sustainable development of the biofuel industry through their continued collaboration and innovation.

this is nice to hear however without the support of the government this will go to waste
