Aquino rules out 'truth' revival
MANILA, Philippines — President Aquino Wednesday ruled out a revival of the Truth commission and instead left to Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales to deal with corruption anomalies involving past government officials.
Aquino said that he was confident the new Ombudsman will efficiently execute the assignment meant for the commission that was recently struck down by the Supreme Court as unconstitutional.
Carpio-Morales, retired Supreme Court justice, took her oath as the country’s chief graftbuster before the President in Malacañang Wednesday afternoon. She will have a term of seven years.
“It is not necessary it has to be the Truth commission as a front. Perhaps we now have confidence that the Ombudsman will be doing the function for which the office was set up,” the President said, in a press conference after attending the opening of the Science Technology Week in Pasay City.
Aquino noted that all evidence and testimonies obtained the Truth commission are “still there” and could be utilized by the new Ombudsman. “I am more interested in substance, how we can hasten the quest for justice.”
Aquino acknowledged the government must abide by the SC decision nullifying Executive Order No. 1 that formed the commission to investigate the anomalies of the past government.
Mandaluyong Rep. Neptali “Boyet” Gonzales II said that the government is serious in ferreting out the truth on the alleged corruption spree during the previous administration.
“It may be a long way but there is a way. Hindi naman nangangahulugan na kumo’t nawala na ang Truth Commission wala na tayo. (It doesn’t mean that our search for truth stops because we lost the Truth Commission.) Basta nandoon ang intensiyon ng gobyerno na papanagutin ang mga may kasalanan (The government’s intention to prosecute those who are liable is there),” he said.
