Ifugao minihydro

KIANGAN, Ifugao, Philippines – The Ambangal Minihydro Power Plant (AMPP) in Barangay Munggayang here generated 700,504 kilowatt hours (kwh) of electricity and realized gross power sales of P1,807,300.32 in 2010, a year after its started operation.

The plant, which began construction in 2008 and finished in 2009, opened in January 25, 2010. Funding came from a $1-million grant from the Tokyo Electric Power Corporation of Japan.

The plant aims to maintain and improve the lives of households engaged in terraces farming in Ifugao, in the process helping conserve the Ifugao Rice Terraces which is a World Heritage site.

It is also intended to be a showcase of locally based energy development and regional vitalization, promote the development and sustainability of minihydro power resources and use the revenues from the sale of generated power for rice terraces conservation.
