MANILA, Philippines – The Guinness World Records (GWR) has certified the University of Sto. Tomas as the new record holder for the “Largest Human Cross” formed.

As reported in the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website, the GWR sent UST a letter—dated Aug. 8—and a certificate last Aug. 10.

"Guinness World Records congratulates you on your achievement,” a part of the letter read.

UST, considered as the oldest Catholic university in Asia which celebrates its quadricentennial anniversary this 2011, gathered a total of 13,266 participants consisting of students, faculty members and other employees last March 9 to form the human cross in commemoration of Ash Wednesday.

An article posted in UST’s official website noted though that the “actual turnout of participants was close to 20k.”

“…the official count only recognized those who swiped their ID's both when entering and going out of the field, as relayed during the instructions,” the article added.

The GWR has already posted UST’s record in its official website, listing it under the “Amazing Feats” and “Mass Participation” categories.

In a statement quoted by abs-cbnNEWS.com, the university related the significance of the human cross in the Thomasian community.

"The iconic black and white cross symbolizes the UST's Catholic and Dominican identity which has stamped Philippine history and Christian growth for four centuries now. The Ash Wednesday event was also meant as the university's affirmation of life," read the statement.

UST has beaten Norway’s record—935 participants at the Oslo Opera House—in May 2010, CBCP also cited.
