Cavite keeps Chabacano dialect alive

The Ternate municipal government in Cavite led by Mayor Lambert Bambao, Vice Mayor Jayson Cabana and the council have approved an ordinance that will preserve and promote the Chabacano dialect in the area.

Ternate, a fourth class municipality in the seventh district of Cavite, is one of the only three remaining areas in the Philippines where Chabanco, a dialect based on Spanish is spoken. The two others are Cavite City and Zamboanga City in Mindanao.

The ordinance requires that the Chabacano dialect be taught in schools in this locality and Cavite City. Public signages in Chabacano would also have to be put up as part of moves to preserve and promote the language.

Chabacano has survived for more than 400 years, making it one of the oldest creole languages in the world.
