Donaire risks twin titles Sunday
MANILA, Philippines — Champion Nonito Donaire and challenger Omar Narvaez renew the storied Philippines-Argentina ring rivalry Sunday when they square off at the WaMu Theater inside Madison Square Garden in New York.
During the official weighin Saturday, Donaire came in at 116 ¼ lbs, while Narvaez tipped in at 117.
Donaire’s twin titles – the WBC and WBO bantamweight championships – will be at stake in the scheduled 12-rounder.
Since 1950s, the Philippines and Argentina have only figured in seven world title fights.
Argentina holds a 5-2 edge with Pascual Perez holding two wins against Filipinos Leo Espinosa (1956) and Dommy Ursua (1958), Juan Martin Coggi over Morris East (1993), Julio Cesar Vasquez over Armand Picar (1994) and Narvaez over Rexon Flores (2006).
Gabriel ‘Flash’ Elorde and Luisito Espinosa hold wins over their Argentine rivals with Elorde winning over Vicente Derado (1996) and Espinosa over Carlos Rios (1997).
Donaire, who is looking at winning more world titles at super-bantam and featherweight in the years to come, is heavily-favored to defeat Narvaez.
