CATARMAN, Philippines  – The local government unit of this province will initiate additional tourism activities in the Island of Biri to attract more tourists to the area.

Northern Samar Governor Paul Daza told reporters in an interview here that his office has already identified specific areas in the island for tourism activities other than rock viewing, that may attract tourists to the province’s premiere tourist destination.

Daza said Biri Island is the only tourism site in his province drawing a lot of local and foreign tourists. The 2,462-hectare is-land town is endowed with beautiful white beaches, lush mangrove areas and beautiful coral gardens, he added.

The Northern Samar governor said that the main attractions of the island include unique rock formations considered as one of the country’s seventh geological wonders rising a hundred meters above sea level. These unique rock formations were formed through tectonic plates movement underwater generated by earthquakes five million years ago.

He disclosed that the provincial government’s office is opening Biri to other tourism activities considering that the island is a protected area and has a lot of very viable potentials to offer visitors both local and foreign. Daza said that the preserved coral gardens which are a rarity in the Philippines can be an ideal place for swimming and diving and for other underwater sports activities.

Daza also said that many local and foreign tourist visitors have been seen in the area surfing, although the island is not yet known to the surfing world as a site for this popular water sport.
