CEBU CITY, Cebu, Philippines — At least two of the 102 bus drivers subjected to a random drug test by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) in Region 7 this week were found positive for illegal drug use and more are expected to be similarly found out as the drug testing on bus drivers here continues until next year.

LTO 7 Director Raul Aguiluz said initial test results showed two bus drivers plying the southern part of the Cebu province were found positive for drug use although the result will still have to be confirmed through a laboratory test in Manila.

The random drug test runs this week in line with the Christmas and New Year’s celebration, when thousands of commuters hop on board public buses to go home to their respective towns. Aguiluz said drug testing will be extended until January.

“The random drug test will continue until all bus drivers who use drugs will be apprehended,” he said.

Since LTO 7 launched the roadside drug test this year, Aguiluz said at least 150 of over 1,000 public utility vehicle drivers were found positive for drug use and their licenses have already been suspended.

Aguiluz said bus drivers found out to be using drugs will not be allowed to drive even as the vehicles they have been driving are impounded. After the confirmatory tests, the drivers’ licenses will be suspended for six months.
