Rains to bring floods in Visayas
MANILA, Philippines — Rains brought by the tail-end of a cold front threatened to bring floods in some parts of the Visayas, prompting local officials to undertake preemptove evacuation in low-lying areas, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Wednesday.
Rey Gozon, officer-in-charge, Office of Civil Defense 8 (OCD8) in Eastern Visayas, said as of 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, 85 families living in flood-prone areas on affected towns have been evacuated.
The NDRRMC, on the other hand, reported that flooding incidents were monitored in Dulag, Isabel, and Merida towns in Leyte.
The NDRRMC has alsl indicated in its latest advisory that widespread rains over Eastern Visayas may trigger flash floods and landslides.
With this, the local government of Tacloban City led by Mayor Alfred Romualdez conducted preemptive evacuation of residents in Barangays Lower Nula Tula and San Roque. The NDRRMC alao stated in its report that "debris and small stones have started falling in the hillside" covering the said villages.
On Ormoc City, the barangay council of Liloan has declared Sitio Isla Noah a danger zone and requested city officials to evacuate residents in the area.
In Leyte, 85 families were evacuated in Barangays Cogon, Cangumbang, Takuranga, and San Antonio in Palo town, and District 6, San Jose ESt, and San Jose West in Burauen town. The said barangays have been identified as flood-prone areas.
