MANILA, Philippines — The suspect, who defaced the graves of the late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino II and President Corazon C. Aquino at Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque City last December, has been arrested, police said Saturday.

Senior Supt. Billy Beltran, Parañaque City Police chief, said the suspect, Mariano Peralta Alganion, was arrested Wednesday at his residence in Cavite after police received tips regarding his whereabouts.

On Christmas Day, President Noynoy Aquino and his other siblings visited the graves of their parents and saw deep scratches on the tombs.

When the President and his relatives left, the suspect allegedly returned and poured black oil and used adhesive tape to stick pieces of paper on the tombs. Written on the pieces of paper were several phrases that the police could not understand. The suspect also attached his picture and wrote his name on the paper.

This was discovered by security Ronnie Mariano who immediately reported the incident to the police.

The pieces of paper were removed from the tombs by Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) headed by Inspector James Baquiran and were sent to the Southern Police District Crime Laboratory for investigation.
