Strong quake jolts Eastern Visayas

MANILA, Philippines — A moderately strong earthquake jolted parts of Eastern Visayas Tuesday night.

The magnitude 5.9 tremor’s epicenter was recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) 55 kilometers northeast of Mercedes, Eastern Samar.

The earthquake was recorded at Intensity 5 in Hernani, Salcedo, Borongan and Guiuan in Eastern Samar, Intensity 4 in Tacloban, Palo and Tolosa in Leyte, Catbalogan in Samar, and Dolores and San Policarpio in Eastern Samar.

The quake was Intensity 3 in St. Bernard and Hinunangan towns in Southern Leyte, Catarman in Northern Samar, and Surigao City, Intensity 2 in Naval, Biliran, and Intensity 1 in Cebu City and Carascal in Surigao del Sur.

The tremor was followed by a 3.7-magnitude quake early Wednesday morning that originated 49 km northeast of Mercedes, Eastern Samar.

Phivolcs received no reports of damage to property or loss of life due to the earthquake in Leyte.
