ANTIPOLO CITY, Rizal, Philippines — The tradition of seeing colorful kites of various sizes and shapes lives on in this upland city of the province as the annual kite-flying completion of the Kiwanis Club will be held again Sunday.

The “Sarikulay Sa Himpapawid” kite-flying event, which is now on its 26th year and will be staged at Sumulong Ball Park, has been the project of Kiwanis Club of Antipolo in cooperation with the local government of this lone city of the province.

Ruel F. Reyes, project chairman of the kite-flying event told Manila Bulletin that this year’s annual activity, which has been gathering dozens of kite enthusiasts and makers, both beginners and old alike, young and old, is once again expected to be a spectacular event for this city on Sunday, February 26.

Assembly and registration will take place on Sumulong Park, formerly Dimasalang Park starting at 12 noon before the competition takes place later at the nearby Sumulong Ball Park.

This yearly event, which is co-sponsored this year by Galaxi Petroleum Fuel Incorporated and Sinag Cable Network Incorporated, started officially sometime in 1981 where in kite-fighting was still part of the original competition.

Reyes recalled that in a windy summer in 1981 at an open field in front of Cristimar Village along Sumulong Ext., the first Kite Flying Competition sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Antipolo was successfully held. The kite-flying was excluded later due to its destructive results.
