Another Sinkhole Found In Cebu
DALAGUETE, Cebu, Philippines — After the discovery of a sinkhole in Dumanjug town, stirring up residents in nearby towns, another sinkhole was discovered – this time in Sitio Carpo, Barangay Casay, this town, authorities said.
The sinkhole in said barangay was reported to the local police station around 7:35 a.m. through a telephone call.
Inspector Dexter Basirgo, Dalaguete police chief said the sinkhole was not immediately discovered because it occurred in a secluded area in said barangay. The hole was estimated to be two to 15 feet deep and about 20 to 25 meters in circumference.
The police have cordoned off and provided the area with a safety signage.
Even if there are 15-foot coconut trees and banana trees about seven feet high growing around the hole, Basirgo said this particular sinkhole is not as dangerous as the one in Dumanjug because “it is not moving.” The site where said sinkhole was found is accessible from the highway but is still quite remote, the police chief said.
For his part, Dalaguete Mayor Ronald Allan Cesante said the sinkhole in his town is “not alarming and not as big as the sinkhole in Dumanjug.”
He said, “It is manageable and our barangay officials are monitoring it,” he said.
Meanwhile, the sinkhole in Barangay Camboang, Dumanjug had emerged after an explosion beneath the soil of a farm lot last February 18. That sinkhole is some 20 to 25 meters wide and around 15 meters deep. Water below the sinkhole is reportedly causing the movement of the soil.
Wikipedia defines a sinkhole as a natural depression or hole in the earth’s surface caused by karst processes, that is, the chemical dissolution of carbonate rocks, or suffusion processes. It may be formed gradually or suddenly, and are found worldwide
