Palarong Pambansa 2014 opening ceremonies set today
Today is a momentous date for Laguna, as it marks the opening of the 57th Palarong Pambansa, which the province is hosting for the very first time.
Gov. Jorge “ER” Ejercito Estregan is understandably proud and elated to lead the festivities beginning with the Parade of Athletes at 6 a.m. at the 19-hectare Laguna Sports Complex Oval.
The opening ceremonies follow right after at the Complex Grandstand, graced by officers of the Department of Education and the Provincial Government of Laguna, as well as famous celebrities like the fighting congressman from Sarangani Manny Pacquiao, basketball star James Yap and Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada.
The week-long event actually started last Saturday with the Governor’s Night held at the multi-purpose gym of the sports complex.
In a press conference held at SM Laguna on Wednesday, Gov. ER reiterated that Palarong Pambansa 2014 (with its tagline “Sports is a Way of Life!”) will go down history as the “biggest and grandest national games ever.” He stressed the fact that it had been the aspiration of the Province of Laguna to host the said event.
Participating in over 27 sports events, four demonstration sports and two special games are 11,200 young athletes and 1,200 technical officials from the 17 regions and 80 provinces of our country.
Coinciding with Palarong Pambansa 2014 is the 4th La Laguna Festival: The Festival of Life, a recipient of the Hall of Fame Award as Best Tourism Event of the Year, bestowed by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) and the Department of Tourism for three consecutive years since 2011.
As he acknowledged the support of SM Calamba and PLDT Home DSL, Gov. ER underscored Laguna’s three titles: Resort Capital of the Philippines, Detroit of the Philippines, and Silicon Valley of the Philippines.
With the Palarong Pambansa 2014 and La Laguna Festival happening at the same time, Gov. ER prided himself in saying they aren’t only promoting the history, arts and culture and traditions of Laguna but that they “will be showcasing the best of the best of what Laguna can offer!”

Stylist to the stars marks milestone
Stylist to the stars Oskee Cabeltis is celebrating his fourth year in the business, both as a grooming expert and as an entrepreneur. In connection with the anniversary, he is transferring to a bigger and better venue, with upgraded salon equipment.
The new salon is located at 654 Boni Ave. cor Ligaya St., Mandaluyong City. Some of his regular customers include veteran film actress Amalia Fuentes, Dolly Ann Carvajal and IC Mendoza. He also caters to sports figures, models and politicians.
Oskee put up his own salon after more than two decades as hair and makeup artist working in various salons. He was inspired by Mother Ricky Reyes with whom he spent more than 10 years of his career. Now, he hopes to encourage young and upcoming beauty salon enthusiasts to work harder to achieve their dreams.
“I always believe that everything in this world can be learned as long as you have the drive and the ambition to pursue your desire,” said the multi-awarded stylist.
“Isang kaibigan ang nagpasok sa akin sa isang salon sa Olongapo City. Dun ako natuto ng lahat ng dapat malaman sa salon. Tapos nag-attend ako ng mga seminars. I really tried to be competitive kasi hindi lang sa craft mo ka dapat magaling pati rin sa pagpapatakbo ng business mo. Kailangan may diskarte ka sa buhay.”
