Philanthropist-entrepreneur vies for Mrs. Universe 2014 title

Our very own beauty queen, entrepreneur and philanthropist Hemilyn Escudero-Tamayo, is among 45 accomplished married 12women from all over the world vying for the Mrs. Universe 2014 title. The competition will culminate on Aug. 28 at the Sunway Resort in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. The competition is aimed to help end violence against women and children.

Hemilyn was a finalist in the Mutya ng Pilipinas beauty pageant in 2005 and in several international beauty titles like Ms. Globe International in Eastern Europe, and Ms. Petite International in Houston, USA. She won the Ms. Global City competition in Taipei, Taiwan in 2008.

Hemilyn is the wife of PAF Reserve Maj. Richard Tamayo. They have a year-old son.

GMA Artist Center star Thea Tolentino celebrated her 18th birthday recently at Villa Morales Garden Resort in Calamba, Laguna. She looked very elegant in a black Francis Libiran gown.

The 18 Candles included fellow “Protégé” contestants Elle Ramirez and Zandra Summer who expressed happiness over their friend’s success. Actress-director Gina Alajar, Thea’s mentor in “Protégé,” was also present at the event.

About her coming-out party, Thea said, “Hinding-hindi ko ito makakalimutan. Sobrang thankful ako hindi lang dahil sa moment na ito, kundi sa blessings na natatanggap ko.”

Thea plays antagonist to Barbie Forteza in the afternoon drama series “The Half Sisters.”

The New Wave competition of the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) has gotten even bigger in 2014. “This year, as we celebrate our 40th year, MMFF will continue the tradition of supporting independent films through a bigger, better and bolder New Wave Section,” MMDA Chair Francis Tolentino said.

The winner (Best Picture) of the Full Length category will receive P300,000. A Special Jury Prize of P200,000 will also be awarded. Aside from its December showing, all entries will be given a special commercial run next year.

For the Student Shorts, the Best Picture will receive P50,000 and P25,000 each for special awards. The Best Picture of the Animation section will get P100,000, while the six winners in the Cinephone competition will each receive P25,000.
