BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occ. (PIA) — The Provincial Environment and Management Office (PEMO) here has distributed over 63,000 seedlings to organizations, schools and individuals in an effort to green the province.
Total number of seedlings has now reached 226,104 kept at PEMO nurseries at Panaad park and at Bunga has reached 226,104, 93,666 of which are ready for planting while 132,438 have yet to mature.
Meanwhile, PEMRO has reported that the local government’s reforestation project in Bgy. Minoyan, Murcia town has produced 80,000 assorted forest tree seedlings.
Sibulan projects alloted P1.5 M
DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PIA) – A total of P1.5 million has been allotted to Sibulan municipality’s projects this year, including production of rice, fruits and vegetables, fishery and coastal resource management, piggery and poultry
raising, training for farmer associations, and marketing agricultural products of Sibulan’s 15 barangays.
Negros Oriental’s 2nd district Rep. George Arnaiz has given a counterpart fund of P1.5 million for the purchase of vegetable seeds. Members of farmer associations in the barangays are expected to go through a training series before funds from the allotment are released. Such training is meant to educate farmers with agri-livelihood production.
S.P.E.S. hires 7,682 students
ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PIA) — Some 7,682 students in Western Visayas will be employed through the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES) with students taught how to value work while they are given a chance to earn.
The Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) office in Region 6 said of that much jobs, Aklan province has a target of 760; Antique, 751; Capiz,771; Guimaras; 250; Iloilo, 1,650l; and Negros Occidental, 3,500.
Created by Republic Act No. 7323 or “An Act to help poor but deserving students pursue their education by encouraging their employment during summer and/or Christmas vacations,” SPES provides students with additional cash on top of what they get from their summer jobs to pay for tuition fees.
Samar bridges to be checked
CATBALOGAN, Samar (PIA) — To ensure public safety during earthquakes, Samar first District Engineering Office, will inspect government buildings, bridges, and similar structures in the area to check for cracks and defects and assess their structural worthiness.
This is in compliance with Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Rogelio Singson’s directive to district offices to assess government structures’ earthquake vulnerability
following the tremor that hit New Zealand and Japan.
Anti-rabies drive in Capiz
ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) — Local
government unit in Capiz are stepping up the drive to control and prevent the spread of rabies in the province.
Provincial Veterinary Officer Dr. Leonil Abordo said massive dog vaccination against rabies is being conducted down to the barangay level in coordination with the Department of Health (DoH).
Some 90 percent of dogs in Capiz – way above the target set by the DoH - were vaccinated in 2010, and the agency has lauded the province, and Tapaz and President Roxas municipalities in particular, for their above-target accomplishments on dog vaccination.
