The Eastern Visayas’ Regional Nutrition Strategic Plan 2011-2016 envisions that by year 2016 and beyond Region 8 shall have become a nutritionally empowered region, where families are food-secured, well nourished and healthy.
Department of Health (DoH) Regional Director Edgardo M. Gonzaga, chairman of RNC, presided the 1st Regional Nutrition Committee Meeting in Tacloban City in which the draft of the plan was crafted to focus on three main strategies – ensure food viability and affordability through increased home food production; capacitate and instill a sense of social responsibility and caring ability in communities; and improve health and nutrition and service delivery. DePed campaigns for K12 program
CEBU CITY – Department of Education (DepEd) Undersecretary Francisco Valera was here recently to pushing for the implementation of the planned K12 program in education which will extend the basic education cycle from 10 years to 12.
Speaking during the recent Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) brand re-launching on its education programs, the DepEd official said the plan is a critical component of the government’s program to improve the quality of education in the country.

DOH to assist in HDH and ADH
ORMOC CITY (PNA) – Two district hospitals in Leyte will benefit from the Hospital Facilities Enhancement Program of the Department of Health (DoH), according to DoH Regional Director Edgardo Gonzaga.
Gonzaga said the two hospitals are Hilongos District Hospital (HDH) and Abuyog District Hospital (ADH).
HDH will get funding for the improvement of its infrastructure and equipment outlay while ADH will be converted into a special rehabilitation center for filariasis in Leyte.
Region 7 elders receive stipend
CORDOVA, Cebu – In compliance to Republic Act 9994, the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010, the regional office of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD-7) began this week the distribution of financial assistance in form of social pension to senior citizens.
Among the first recipients of the monthly stipend for citizens at least 77 years old and who are not receiving any retirement fund from other institutions were 14 residents of this town.
Each of them got P1,500 for the first quarter of this year, said Emma Patalinghug of the DSWD-7. (Phoebe Jen Indino)
Better hospital facilities vowed
OSLOB, Cebu – The Cebu provincial government is bent on upgrading all the district hospitals in the entire province, especially the 10-bed hospitals, to address the need of residents and to cope with the influx of tourists in the countryside.
Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia said the priority will be to upgrade the 10-bed district hospitals into 25-bed secondary hospitals with enhanced services and more medical personnel.
Those district hospitals with 25 beds will also be upgraded with private rooms and more services. (Mars W. Mosqueda Jr.)
