CEBU CITY, Philippines (PNA) — Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama has clarified that the city government will provide relocation sites to informal settlers in the city affected by clearing operations along the Mahiga Creek. Rama made the statement after the Cebu City Council passed a resolution asking him to suspend the demolition of illegal structures built along the city’s creeks and rivers until the city prepares relocation sites for them. Rama said this has always been his stand from the start and he has directed the Department for the Welfare of the Urban Poor to work on a relocation site.
Teachers complain of late honoraria
CEBU CITY (PNA) — Some 400 public pre-school teachers in Cebu City are complaining about their long-delayed P3,000 honoraria.
Some of them sought the help of Cebu City Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young through text messages. They said hundreds of them have yet to receive their honoraria since last November. Young said he has followed up on the release of the honoraria and he is thankful that the City Schools Division is cooperative. Those who complained are the subsidized pre-school teachers
in the city who have been promised to get P3,000 monthly honoraria per class.
Roads prepared for class opening
ILOILO CITY (PNA) — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), through its district offices here, has started its repair of national roads and other maintenance works that will ensure the safety of thousands of schoolchildren as classes begin on June 6. DPWH regional director Evelyn Barroso earlier directed all district engineers in Western Visayas to repair all potholes and clear obstructions along national roads leading to school sites. Line canals and drainage systems were ordered cleaned and de-clogged.
No fees in public schools
ILOILO CITY (PNA) — The Department of Education (DepEd) is definitely not asking and collecting school enrollment fees this school opening when students in public elementary and high schools in Western Visayas troop to the schools starting June 6. This was disclosed by DepEd regional director Mildred Garay recently after telling all public school teachers in the region to accept and enroll all pupils in the elementary and students in high schools without exacting school fees or demanding school uniforms. “The collection of school fees may come later but no teacher or school will deny enrollment to a student not paying the fees,” Garay said.
Antique gov't sees P100-M savings
SAN JOSE, Antique (PNA) — The provincial government of Antique is expected to save more than P100 million once it starts to adhere to the 45 percent ceiling for Personnel Services (PS) as provided for in Section 325 of the Local Government Code (LGC) effective June 1. Currently, 54 percent, or P347.9 million of the province’s P645.1-million budget for 2011, has been allotted for personal services. Antique Gov. Exequiel B. Javier said he was directed by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and the Commission on Audit (CoA) to implement the law and reduce the PS to what is prescribed by the law.
