ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PIA) – What would happen to a nation with officials in government who are least qualified or are corrupt citizens?
This is the subject of a new book by Dr. Ronnie V. Amorado entitled “Kakistocracy: Rule of the Unprincipled, Unethical, and Unqualified” which will be launched during a Visayas colloquium on June 21 in Cebu City by the Office of the Ombudsman in the Visayas headed by Deputy Ombudsman Pelagio Apostol and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The book tackles corruption in the Philippines and government’s anti-corruption initiatives. The campaign against corruption is a major thrust of the Aquino administration.
Teachers lead in fun run
BORONGAN, Eastern Samar (PIA) – As the nation celebrated national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal’s 150th birthday yesterday, the Department of Education (DepEd), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Philippine National Police (PNP), the youth and barangay officials held a “fun run” in this town.
The three districts here named Borongan East, West and North gathered some 400 teachers, according to Minda Cidro of Barangay Songco Elementary School.
The fun run was part of a nationwide activity intended for Filipinos to remain aware of Rizal’s heroism.
Filipina smokers
ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PNA) – The Department of Health (DoH) is raising an alert about more young Filipino girls between 13 to 15 years old currently smoking even in school campuses even as it pointed out that one of five students, regardless of gender, are now smokers.
DoH Regional Director Ariel Valencia said the DoH study points to more women smoking than men at present.
The study was collaborated by the Iloilo City Anti-Smoking Task Force (ICAST) which says that working women particularly those working in the business process outsourcing call centers and not only students are cigarette smokers.
P.A. officer hurt in accident
DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PNA) – A Philippine Army officer assigned in northern Negros Oriental is in critical condition at the Silliman Medical Center where he was brought after a vehicular accident Thursday last week in Guihulngan, 100 kilometers north of Dumaguete.
The official was identified as 1Lt. Angelito Castro Luna, 31, married, from Anda, Pangasinan, and the civil military operations officer of the 11th Infantry Battalion, whose mother unit is the 302nd Brigade, based in McKinley, Guihulngan.
He was on a motorcycle which collided with a motorcab, causing severe damage to his head.
Job fair in Thomas Oppus
SOUTHERN LEYTE (PIA) – Ten placement agencies will join the One-Stop Jobs Fair to be held on June 21 at Tomas Oppus town in Southern Leyte province.
The event marks the 42nd Founding Day anniversary of said town, and is also the first-ever job fair to be held there.
Jobs offered are for domestic helpers, engineers, skilled and non-skilled jobs, professionals, cooks, waiters, nurses, computer-related works, among others.
The job hiring on June 22 will be participated in by national line agencies which will facilitate the processing of required employment documents.
