TIBIAO, Antique, Philippines – A small town in Antique province is set to host the 2012 International Kayaking Cup.
According to Flord Nicson Calawag of the Municipal Tourism, Arts and Culture Council, Tibiao town will once again host kayakers from almost a dozen countries in a competition slated on September or October 2012. It first played host to international kayakers in a 1997 competition.
While Tibiao River is a good location for swimming and cliff diving, it is one of the best rivers in the country for white-water kayaking. (Tara Yap)
Aussie firm eyes Cebu facility
BALAMBAN, Cebu – Cebu's reputation as the shipbuilding capital of the Philippines gets another boost as a world-renown Australian company Monday announced it has signed a US$10 billion contract with the United States Navy for another shipbuilding project here.
Austal, a world leading manufacturer of aluminum vessels, said it will be building military support ships for the US Navy and will be redeveloping the FBMA Marine Inc., which used to be an Aboitiz-owned shipbuillding plant inside the West Cebu Industrial Park (WCIP) in Balamban town.
Balamban is home to Tsuneishi Heavy Industries, a shipbuilding company that holds at least 30,000 workers, giving the town a reputation as the country's shipbuilding capital. (Mars W. Mosqueda Jr.)
Bogo City gets new hospital
BOGO CITY, Cebu – Residents of this newly-recognized city located on the northern part of Cebu will soon benefit from upgraded hospital services as the Cebu Provincial Government is scheduling the transformation of the city's district hospital.
From a 50-bed district hospital, the Severo Verallo Memorial District Hospital will be upgraded into a 100-bed hospital after the main office of the Department of Health (DoH) has finally approved the plans for the project, said Provincial Engineer Eulogio Pelayre.
Pelayre said the Provincial Engineering Office will now create the detailed engineering plan for the upgrading of the said hospital and submit the plan, again, to the DoH in Manila. Once the engineering plan is approved, Pelayri said construction will immediately start.
Island town im proves vegetable production
CAMOTES ISLAND, Cebu — Aiming to improve its vegetable production, the municipality of San Francisco in this island will be funding a greenhouse project in each of its 15 barangays.
Vice Mayor Alfredo Arquillano Jr. bared that since the town wants to increase the yield of its vegetable production to augment the income of the farmers the council will be allocating specific budget for the establishment of greenhouses in every barangay. (Phoebe Jen Indino)
Iloilo saves P25M from bibidding
ILOILO CITY, (PNA) — The Iloilo Provincial Government has saved P25 million in a recent bidding for the procurement of new dump trucks and heavy equipment to be used in the maintenance of provincial roads and other government projects.
The Pilipinas Hino and Nissan are the winning bidders for 10 dump trucks, two graders, one fuel tanker and one unit prime mover which cost almost P70.1 million. The provincial government has allocated P95.8 million for this purchase.
