TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, Philippines (PIA) — Eastern Visayas farmers will soon be using organic fertilizers in their farms.With the introduction of vermicomposting here, farmers’ dependency on inorganic fertilizer is expected to be reduced and cut farming production cost.
The Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM)’s Organic Fertilizer Production Project (OFPP) is targeting, for its first cropping season, some 1,000 hectares of farmlands to benefit from the project. Another 1,000 hectares will be targeted for the next cropping season.
NNISF officers get OD training
NEGROS OCCIDENTAL (PIA) — The Northern Negros Natural Park (NNNP) Management Council and the European Union started Wednesday a three-day organizational development (OD) training with some 45 participants from Northern Negros Integrated Social Forestry (NNISF) Associations at the KAHULIHOHA Resort in Brgy. Alegria, Murcia, Negros Occidental.
The seminar will train ISF officers to be more receptive about issues surrounding them and be prepared for higher level of organizational strengthening and development and to effectively serve in protecting the remaining NNNP forest resources, as well as vital partners in natural resources management.
San Carlos City tree-planting
SAN CARLOS CITY, Negros Occidental (PIA) — San Carlos City recently held its 21st tree-planting activity with employees from local and national government offices, barangays, public and private schools, banks, religious groups, private entities and non-government organizations participating.
The tree planting was conducted in the rugged hills of Sitio Medina, Brgy. Rizal, covering an area of about one hectare owned by the city government, and adjacent to the city’s memorial tree park. Over 2,000 mahogany seedlings were planted. San Carlos City, comprised of some 42,185 hectares of rich agricultural and industrial lands, is in Negros Island’s northeastern part, 146 kilometers from Bacolod City.
Dumaguete walk for a cause
DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PIA) — The Dumaguete City government led over 1,000 participants in the Nutri-fit walk-for-a-cause for underweight pre-school children last Sunday. Sunday.
The activity raised P40,000 which will be used for the City Nutrition Office (CNO)’s feeding program and nutrition education activities.
However, the city hopes to collect P80,000 more to reach a P120,000 target, with schools, private establishments and other officials pledging to donate to the cause until this August.
Barangay officers join BPAT seminar
ENRIQUE VILLANUEVA, Siquijor (PIA) — Some 36 barangay officials from 14 barangays in Enrique Villanueva, Siquijor attended the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPAT) seminar conducted by the Philippine National Police (PNP) here recently.
Police Provincial Director Sr. Supt. Ernesto Fuentes Agas said the BPAT seminar is a comprehensive and “catch all” strategy by the PNP in tapping peace and order stakeholders in the community. It aims to help in data and intelligence report gathering, ensure the effective prevention, control and suppression of crimes and efficient management of disasters and emergencies.
