DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Occ., Philippines (PNA) — The Dumaguete police is strengthening security measures this week in anticipation of an influx of local and foreign visitors attending the Silliman University’s 110th Founders' Day anniversary celebration.
Dumaguete police chief Supt. Crisaleo Tolentino said the Negros Oriental Philippine National Police provincial office will be fielding augmentation cops to ensure the public safety and security especially during the height of the celebration during the weekend.

Fighting infestation
ILOILO CITY, Iloilo —Rat baiting has begun in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo to combat the rising number of farmlands in the province infested by rats. Dr. Ildefonso Toledo, chief provincial agriculturist, said the Municipal Agriculture Office of Sta. Barbara has taken the initiative to entice rats to eat food with poison.
Of 31 rat infested towns in Iloilo, Sta. Barbara is the most affected with 500 hectares of some 2,400 hectares farmlands damaged by rats in the province. Town agriculturists hope the baiting will stop, if not minimize, the spread of infestation. (Tara Yap)
Gulayan project
SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) — Antique province has launched anew the Gulayan sa Paaralan Project to combat malnutrition in the province. Provincial Agriculturist Nicolasito Calawag said the program is vital not only to attain food sustainability but also to support the extensive efforts of government agencies, multi-sectoral groups (private/civil society) and families to eradicate malnutrition.
Antique is one of the provinces in the country with high malnutrition incidence. Through the Department of Agriculture’s five-year Agri Pinoy Program, 528 public elementary and high schools will be aided in implementing the project.
Illegal settlers
ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PNA) — Reacting to reports of the existence of squatting syndicates in relocation sites owned by the city government, Mayor Jed Patrick has ordered the Iloilo City’s Urban Poor Affairs Office (ICUPAO) to validate over 5,000 illegal settlers who have availed of the accommodation under the city’s socialized housing program.
The city government owns 29 relocation sites covering 50 hectares within the metropolis.
