ILOILO CITY, Iloilo – Philippine Navy commander, Vice-Admiral Alexander Pama, was honored as an Outstanding Ilonggo, one of nine persons conferred the “Dungog sang Dakbanwa sang Iloilo 2011” award during the culmination of Iloilo City’s 74th Charter Day celebrations.
Pama is the 32nd Flag Officer in Command of the Philippine Navy and, as such, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Iloilo president Joe Marie Agriam, chairman of the awarding body said he has “given honor, distinction, and prestige to Iloilo City.” (Tara Yap)
No plastic
ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) – Spot inspection on compliance with an ordinance banning plastic use was conducted on some establishments in this city last Aug. 24 by the Task Force on Environmental Protection (RCTEP).
City Ordinance No. 030-2011 prohibits business establishments or individuals from selling or providing plastic bags as packing materials to consumers during Wednesdays.
The ordinance aims to cut, if not totally eliminate plastic bags and polystyrene foams as packing materials in stores; it took effect last August 5, and imposition of penalties for violators took effect last Aug. 24.
Cops promoted
DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PIA) – A total of 232 Negros Oriental Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel were promoted in a simultaneous Pinning of Ranks held recently at the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office (NOPPO), Agan-an headquarters.
The promotees included 228 police non-commissioned officers (PNCOs) and four police commissioned officers (PCOs) in the province.
The PNCOs were composed of 38 personnel promoted to SPO4, three to SPO3, two to SPO2, 96 to SPO1, 64 to PO3, and 25 to PO2. PNP Provincial Director, Sr. Supt. Rey Lyndon Lawas led the affair.
Poetry contest
TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte (PIA) – To mark the 17th National Crime Prevention Week (NCPW) and the 111th Philippine Civil Service Anniversary (PCSA) in September, the Philippine Information Agency in Region 8 will hold two siday (poetry) contests along with DYVL Aksyon Radyo.
Themed “Pinoy Ako Crime Prevention Misyon Ko,” the NCPW Siday contest will be on September 1-7, 2011 while the PCSA Siday contest, themed Championing R.A.C.E.: Public Service Excellence at Full Speed,’ will be on September 19-23, 2011.

Seniors’ pension
MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte (PIA8) – Some 99 indigent senior citizens in Maasin City received their three-month social pension from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD-8) at the Senior Citizen’s Building, Maasin City last Friday. Each indigent senior citizen entitled to P500 monthly received P1,500 as social pension for January to June 2011. City Social Welfare and Development senior staff, Fe Nida Sy said the number of total beneficiaries of 104 indigent senior citizens was cut down to 99 since three of them had passed away and one is already in the United States.
