CATARMAN, Northern Samar, Philippines (PIA) — The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Northern Samar Information Center is organizing local media here anew to be integrated into one organization under the name, Media Society of Northern Samar, to establish a stronger and united organization regardless of affiliation, station or newspaper.
Elected president of said group is Ms. Rachel Arnaiz, an anchor of MUEWS FM and writer of Leyte Samar Daily Express and Philippine Daily Inquirer; Vice-president for print Perigrino Arillo, publisher of Waraynon; Vice-president for broadcast Beth Betonio, Manager of FM Allen; Secretary Arlyn Tepace, information officer of Provincial Information Office; Treasurer Jayne Galit-Bantayan of DYSM; Auditor Tito Tepace of MUEWS FM; Business Manager Virgilio Besarino of DYSM and public information officer (PIO) Maurice De Guia of the Provincial Information Office.
Cops commended
SOUTHERN LEYTE (PIA) — The Southern Leyte Police Provincial Office commended PNP personnel of Maasin City and Macrohon police officers for their accomplishments in enforcing the law against illegal drugs and arrest of wanted persons in their areas of responsibility.
Commended were PSupt Hector Enage, Maasin police chief and personnel SP04 Nicasio F Sunit, P02 Oscar D Dullasin Jr, P02 Dominico G Petere and P02 Aldous Dexter M Roa, for their successful anti-illegal drugs operation at Brgy. Maria Clara, Maasin City last September 15.
Anti-filariasis
TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte (PIA) — The Department of Health (DoH) in Eastern Visayas is focusing on its Mass Drug Administration (MDA) as a strategy in the elimination of lymphatic filariasis disease in Northern Leyte.
Cases of the said disease have occurred in the towns of Mahaplag and Hindang in Leyte province and the health department in the region has conducted a Consultative Workshop on the National Filariasis Elimination Program in Northern Leyte to eradicate filariasis in the targeted population.
Cooking contest
ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) — A cooking contest among Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) and tourism students of Filamer Christian University (FCU) held here recently capped the 2011 Provincial Tourism Week (PTW) celebration in Capiz. Four teams joined the contest with seafood as main ingredient used in the cooking competition.
The week-long celebration with the theme “Tourism: Embracing Cultures” kicked off last Sept. 22 with the opening of a one-stop shop of government services dubbed “Capiz nga Serbisyo Publiko sa Capitolyo.”
Helmet law
TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte (PIA) — The Leyte Sangguniang Panlalawigan has passed a resolution calling for stricter implementation of Republic Act 10054 or the Mandatory Helmet Act of 2010.
First District of Leyte Board Member Roque Tiu who authored the resolution, said that based on Republic Act 10054, motorcycle riders and their passengers are required to wear standard protective helmets "while driving motorcycles, whether on long or short drives, at any time of the day, in any type of road and highway."
