TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, Philippines (PIA) – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) recently presented the BAGWIS (otherwise known as the DTI Certified Establishments Program) award to 28 certified business establishments in Leyte province. DTI-Leyte director Desiderio Belas, Jr. said the award recognizes establishments upholding the rights of consumers and those practicing responsible business enabling consumers to get the best value for their money.
Recipients of the Gold BAGWIS awards were Robinsons Place Tacloban and other stores with nationwide branches while the BAGWIS Silver Award was presented to Gaisano Capital of Tacloban City for the Department Store Category; Gleen Marketing Tacloban City and Gleen Marketing Ormoc for the Appliance Center Category.
Empowerment camp
KALIBO, Aklan (PIA) – Convergence of youth services in Aklan was showcased here recently with the holding of the 2011 Youth Empowerment Camp themed “Youth’s Involvement: The World at 7 Billion, ”at the Regional Science High School (RSHS) for Region 6 in Old Buswang, Kalibo.
This was made possible through the pooling of forces by the Aklan Provincial Population and Gender Office (AKPPGO), Provincial Technical Working Group-Youth Affairs, Provincial Population Office-Gender and Development/Philippines Against Child Trafficking(GAD/PACT) Aklan, the academe, and non-government organizations through Men Oppose to Violence Everywhere (MOVE) – Aklan and the General Parent-Teacher Association (GPTA).
Nutrition campaign
ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PIA) – The broadcast media campaigns launched by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) nationwide is gaining grounds in making more Filipinos “nutritionally” aware. The 2011 Second Quarter Survey of the Social Weather Station (SWS) shows some 29 percent of household heads watch or listen to nutrition programs on radio and television.
NNC regional coordinator Nona Tad-y said this is encouraging as in Region 6, the NNC is using both mediums to disseminate messages on breastfeeding and nutrition. A SWS survey shows the Visayas having a 23 percent proportion of audiences.
Dumaguete congress
DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental - Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) from Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental and Siquijor provinces were in Dumaguete City for this year’s two-day 7th Regional Congress which ended Tuesday.
The congress with its theme: “Developing Capacities of BSN to Overcome Challenges” was organized by the NNC in Region 7 through the Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholars Association (FeBaNuSA7).

Skills registry
BORONGAN, Eastern Samar (PIA) – In its main target to obtain a profile of prospective job applicants, the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) here recently held a so-called Skills Registry System (SRS) as part of its effort to obtain a good profile of prospective job applicants.
DoLE provincial director, Alexi Abellar said the data to be gathered from the three-day SRS will be posted in DoLE’s Repository System dubbed phil-jobnet.com where job seekers’ skills and other pertinent information are made available for recruiters.
