NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, Philippines (PIA) — The Negros Occidental Provincial Library Services Division of the Office of the Governor recently held a storytelling contest in line with the 2011 National Book Week Celebration with the theme, “Aklatan para sa Kaunlaran” (Libraries for progress) at the Provincial Library recently.
In his message, 2nd district board member and Provincial Committee on Education, Culture and Arts Chairman Miller Serondo stressed the importance of education as a tool to better the condition of Filipino families and the opportunity to “take a glimpse of our rich heritage through the oral tradition, which is storytelling.”
Eight high school students from various public schools joined the contest with each given seven minutes to deliver a story of their own choice. Wendy Hershey Escosora of Negros Occidental High School topped the tilt with “Pyramus and Thisbe” as her winning piece, Jhonnielyn Joy Fidel of Bacolod City National High School placed second and Sheena Mae Cantallopez of La Castellana National High School ranked third.
Exemplary service
CEBU CITY, Cebu (PIA) — Ten urban poor leaders nationwide will receive an Award for Exemplary Service as the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP) celebrates its 25th Anniversary on December 8, 2011. Two of the awardees are from the Visayas region, that is, from Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu and Tacloban City, Leyte.
Said awardees are Concordio D. Austero of the Ibabao Marigondon Urban Poor Association, Marigondon, Lapu-Lapu City and Danilo M. Naputo of Brgy. 103 Palanog Homeowners Association, Inc., Brgy. 103, Tacloban City.
The award acknowledges the exemplary contribution and good deeds of the urban poor leaders in uplifting the sectors’ lives and dignity.
Nominees were endorsed by urban poor organizations and chosen according to service they rendered to the urban poor sector. President Benigno S. Aquino III will give the awards on December 9, 2011 at Heroes’ Hall, Malacañang, Manila.
