ILOILO CITY, Philippines (PNA) — Minors are not allowed to work in firecracker manufacturing under Republic Act. 7610, otherwise known as the "Special Protection Of Children Against Child Abuse, Exploitation And Discrimination," according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) here.
Nancy Yee, DoLE’s Labor Employment Officer II, said Section 2 of the law states that special protection shall be provided to children from all forms of abuse, neglect, cruelty, exploitation and discrimination, and other conditions prejudicial to their development including child labor.
Water shortage
ILOILO CITY (PNA) — Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog here is eyeing water rationing as an option to serve city areas seriously affected by water shortage especially in the city proper.
The city mayor also acted with dispatch and called Local Waterworks Utilities Administration (LWUA) chairman Rene Villa regarding the critical water supply situation, saying that almost 50 percent of barangays in the city proper has no water supply from the Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD).
Cheering inmates
ILOILO CITY (PNA) — Christmas cheers will brighten the lives of about 100 women inmates at the Iloilo City police office holding center on Dec. 16. Iloilo City Hall Press Corps (ICHPC) president Joel Franco said the Christmas party and gift giving to the female inmates was an institutionalized project of the press corps for the past 10 years.
In celebrating its 11th year of Christmas with Inmates, the ICHPC has partnered with SM City Iloilo, Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) regional office, Philippine Red Cross- Iloilo chapter, Jolibee Foods, Globe Telecommunications and all other benevolent city and national government officials and private individuals to bring cheers to women inmates.
Teves appointment
DUMAGUETE CITY (PNA) — Former Rep. Herminio Teves of the third district of Negros Oriental has been appointed Senior Policy Adviser on Fiscal and Tax Administration Matters at the House of Representatives.
According to Teves, he was informed just recently on the task given him by the House of Representatives.
He will be required to attend the regular meeting of the Committee on Ways and Means every Tuesday at the House of Representatives.
House helpers
DUMAGUETE CITY (PNA) — Violence against women and children (VAWC) advocates working for the protection of house helpers or “kasambahay” in Negros Oriental have expressed disappointment over the seemingly indifferent attitude of local officials and policy makers to pass an ordinance requiring domestic workers to register even at the barangay level.
In a recent forum held in support of the 18-day Campaign to End Violence Against Women, which culminates on Dec. 12, Marlene Pepino of the Visayan Forum, Inc. and the Negros Oriental Provincial Council for Women, lamented that for five years, they have lobbied for the Dumaguete City council to pass an ordinance on the registration of house helpers.
