ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PNA) – Scholars of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) under its Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) and Congressional Migrant Workers Scholarship Program (CMWSP) who completed their respective degrees were recognized recently, highlighting OWWA’s 30th anniversary in Western Visayas. The EDSP and CMWSP are offered by OWWA to help dependents of Overseas Filipino Works (OFW’s) in their schooling. While the CMWSP is about to end, the EDSP will continue this year with 27 students in Region 6 given scholarships.
Tour Guiding
TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte (PIA) – The Department of Tourism’s Office of Tourism Services and the Leyte provincial government has partnered in training government-accredited professional service providers in Region 8. Starting last May 7, a 21-day training program was designed for graduates to be accredited as regional tour guides. Held at the Leyte Sports Development Center, lectures will include history, culture, folklore, social structure and politics, works ethics, basic first aid, good grooming, effective communications and guiding techniques. Trainees will take qualifying exams in both written and oral forms after the training program.
Internship Program
KALIBO, Aklan (PIA) – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is set to employ 561 Aklanon Out-of-School (OSY) and in-school youths for 52 days under the Expanded Government Internship Program (EGIP). Some P8,080,644 has been allotted by government for this program in Aklan. For 52 days of service, each beneficiary will receive P14,404 at the end of his or her assignment, as each of them will be paid P277 daily, which Gallega said, is based on the National Daily Wage rate. The EGIP is a component of the Kabataan 2000 program providing youths a chance to work in government agencies.
Risk Areas
CATARMAN, Northern Samar (PIA) – The University of Eastern Philippines (UEP), in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Mines and Geo-Sciences Bureau has identified hazard-prone areas within its campus as part of its contingency plan in case of an emergency. MGB-identified risk areas possible to happen within the UEP are landslide sites and liquefaction, or the loosening of ground soil spawned by non-stop rains for days. UEP President, Atty. Mar de Asis said, “Disaster preparedness has been part of UEP’s continuing, ongoing concern.”
Satellite Registrations
ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PIA) – The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in Iloilo City is urging eligible voters, especially new voters, to take advantage of satellite registrations to be conducted in various districts including in Molo District on May 8 to 21 at the Fundidor Gym; Mandurriao district on May 22 to June 1 at the Onate-De Leon Brgy Hall; Jaro District on June 2 to June 26 at the ABC Hall Plaza Jaro; Lapaz district on June 27 to July 7 at the ABC Hall Lapaz Plaza; and Lapuz on July 9 to 17 at the Bo. Obrero Gym, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays to Saturdays including holidays.
