ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PIA6) — University of the Philippines Professor Dr. Rex Sadaba is urging proper mangrove management and conservation by planting mangrove propagules in the right sites so as to ensure mangrove growth and sustainability. Sadaba said conservation is important as mangrove survival in the region is only from 10 to 20 percent. He also said mangrove protection entails identifying mangroves eco-park in the area. In Panay, there are three mangrove eco-parks identified, namely, Bakhaw Eco-Park in Buswang, Kalibo, Aklan; Bugtong Bato Mangrove Eco-park in Ibajay, Aklan; and in Roxas City’s Culajao Mangrove Eco-Park.
Women’s Center
TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte — A Women's Center has been established in Barangay 14 here to help women in crisis. Barangay councilor Johnson D. Cabigon said his father, former Leyte Governor Bernardo Cabigon donated the Center set on the barangay hall’s third floor. The center, Cabigon said, was donated to extend assistance to women with problems and the barangay is the first in Tacloban to open such a center. “We value women’s rights in nation building and their role in the community,” Cabigon said. TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte — Some 295 kids participated in free An Waray summer workshops An Waray party- list Rep. Florencio Noel said, adding that the participants were chosen by the An Waray Youth and Development Center (AWYDC) which also conducted said workshops. Noel said the workshops’ aim was to develop the participants’ talents and skills in dance, theater, art and guitar playing. (Restituto A. Cayubit)
Bomb-Sniffing Dogs
DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PIA) — The Negros Oriental provincial government has bought two bomb-sniffing dogs to boost the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office (NOPPO)’s anti-crime and anti-terrorism drive. The two K-9 dogs, a two-year-old Belgian Malinois and a yellow Labrador trained to sniff bombs, are meant to boost the province’s anti-criminality campaign. The dogs cost the province P300,000 each and their payment were sourced from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management fund for anti-terrorism measures.
Cops Dismissed
DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PNA) — Philippine National Police (PNP) provincial director Sr. Supt. Edward Carranza has relieved two Negros Oriental police chiefs – Domeneciano Distrito Jr. and Rolando Asidoy, chief of police of Tanjay City and Sta. Catalina town respectively – for failure to curb illegal gambling and illegal drugs trade in their respective areas of assignment. Their relief is in accordance with the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s police-one-strike policy. Carranza said all police chiefs have been informed about such policy and the order is “not a joke and I am serious about its implementation, especially with regards failure to address illegal gambling and illegal drugs.
