KALIBO, Aklan (PIA6) — Aklan’s Provincial Health Office (PHO) will conduct a “TB in Prison Program” for prisoners who may be suffering from tuberculosis (TB). The program will identify prisoners/detainees with signs and symptoms of TB. There will also be free consultations courtesy of doctors joining the activity. It will be implemented in Aklan’s two detention facilities - the Aklan Rehabilitation Center and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) – on August 23, in coordination with the Provincial TB Council. The holding of the TB in Prison activity, according to the PHO, will be one of the highlights of Aklan’s observance this year of the National Lung Month this August.
D.O.S.T. SCHOLARSHIPS
ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA6) — of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) provincial head in Capiz Gerbe Dellava said the DOST is giving graduating high school students a chance to pursue their studies under the DOST’s Undergraduate Scholarship program. The scholarship grant is open to those taking up science and technology courses in the next school year. Natural-born Filipino citizens in the top five percent of the regular high school graduating class, of good moral character and a qualifier of the DOST – Science Education Institute (SEI) examination are eligible for the grant. Scholarship perks include free tuition and a host of allowances.

BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan (PIA) — Korean nationals topped the list of foreign tourists who went to Boracay Island as of July, 2012. Aklan’s Provincial Tourism Operations Office (PTOO) say Koreans who went to the island last month reached 18,224, with Taiwanese tourists coming second with 8,517 arrivals and Chinese, third, with 2,669. Other foreign nationals who visited the island in July were from the U.S.with 1,426; Australia, 909; Hongkong, 532; Japan, 475; Russia, 447; Germany, 440 and Saudi Arabia, 408.
SIQUIJOR ATTRACTIONS
SIQUIJOR (PIA) — Siquijor province participated in the 23rd Philippine Travel Mart at the SMX Convention Center Mall of Asia Complex last Aug. 10-12 in a bid to boost the local tourism industry. Said Travel Mart is the premiere and biggest annual travel show in the country. Siquijor Provincial Tourism Officer Jossette Armirola said Siquijor has been a regular participant in the annual event as it has been proven effective where the province’s tourism industry is concerned. "Siquijor booth visitors who have been to Siquijor say they love the island and want to go back,” she said, adding that tourist arrivals here have been increasing annually, totaling 18,964 from January to June this year.
NUTRITION ADVOCATE
CATBALOGAN CITY, Samar (PIA) — The National Nutrition Council (NNC) has ‘enlisted’ Samar Governor Sharee Ann Tan as a nutrition advocate. She met with other pregnant women in the Health and Nutrition Forum on Samar Day last August 11. Tan encouraged fellow mothers to eat vegetables so as to serve as a model for their children in planting and eating vegetables in their backyards not necessarily for business but for food sustenance. She distributed weighing scales and height boards to 57 barangay health workers (BHWs) in line with the nutrition program and said the weighing scales and height board will be used to determine the number of malnourished children in the barangays for monitoring.
