ILOILO CITY, Iloilo — The 3rd Millennium Convention of the Alliance of Young Nurse Leaders and Advocates (AYNLA) has formally opened in Iloilo City. The two-day convention that ends September 23 highlights the needed reforms of Philippine nursing law as well as reassessing the status of Filipino nurses both in the country and abroad. It tackles the two United Nations-Millennium Development Goals that will address how to curb maternal mortality and HIV/AIDS cases. The convention has been discussing universal health care for Filipinos, health service delivery, health financing, health human resource, reduction of teenage pregnancies, men’s role in reproductive health, and empowering younger generation of women through health advocacy. CEBU CITY- Given the increasing number of diabetes patients, Dr. Marian Denopol, past president of the Cebu Medical Society (CMS) called on restaurants and food establishment owners here to also offer sugar-friendly staples to attract additional customers. “Our diabetes patients are increasing, so it’s about time that food establishments offer them sugar-friendly diet,” she said. Diabetes ranked eighth among the leading cause of mortality among Filipinos, where one out of every five adult Filipinos are diabetic, according to the 2007 national survey conducted on the prevalence of diabetes in the country. T.E.S.D.A. COURSES
ILOILO CITY (PNA) – The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) has accredited six competency courses being taught at the Technical Institute of Iloilo City (TIIC). After an intensive evaluation, TESDA accredited plumbing and construction painting in the level of National Certificate (NC) II, automotive servicing, carpentry, masonry, electrical installation and maintenance. “The TIIC is a TESDA-recognized training school and our graduates can already take the assessment test for NC II qualification which is a requirement for employment abroad. Even local companies now have a high demand for NC II holders,” Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog said.
MASSKARA FEST
BACOLOD CITY (PNA) – Police beefed up its security around the city as organizers of the Masskara Festival started to build at least 50 kiosks around the public plaza in preparation for the event that will run from October 1-22. With the theme “Life’s Good in Bacolod," this year's festival will highlight the unique lifestyle in Bacolod City to attract more tourists, said festival director Eli F.J Tajanlangit. He stressed that life is good in Bacolod “not only because of its dynamic economy that is now changing its landscape and skyline, but also because of everyday details like thriving art scene and unique cuisine."
