CEBU CITY, Cebu – The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Region 7 (DSWD 7) intends to establish a milk bank in its Reception and Study Center for Children (RSCC), a 24-residential facility providing temporary shelter and care for infants two year old and below. DSWD 7 Nutritionist Dietician, Melinda Canares said such milk bank will be for babies in the RSCC in need of breast milk after being abandoned by their mothers. She urged mothers with extra breast milk to donate such in the RSCC even as the latter said it is welcoming breast milk from walk-in donors. (Phoebe Jen Indino)
REGIONAL AWARDEES
ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PIA) – The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) VI recently gave out recognitions for excellence in disaster risk management and humanitarian assistance to this year's winners. “The Gawad Kalasag Regional Awardees exemplify excellence in the field of disaster risk reduction,” said Emmanuel De Guzman, keynote speaker during the 2012 Awarding Ceremonies held here at the Amigo Terrace Hotel here. For provincial category, Guimaras was awarded the top prize, with Iloilo and Aklan, in second and third places, respectively. For highly urbanized city, the Bacolod City local government was awarded first place.
INDIGENOUS SEEDLINGS
ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PIA) – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Western Visayas (DENR-6) has raised some 47.2 million of indigenous species, or 83 percent of the nearly 57 million seedlings it has sown as of date. The agency and its partners have pooled efforts for the use of indigenous seedlings for the National Greening Program (NGP) implementation. DENR-6 Executive Director Adeluisa Siapno said indigenous seedlings are more adaptive to local conditions such as topography and soil quality. “We would like to give the greening program an identity of its own here in the region through the use of indigenous forest trees, where we have abundant resources,” he said.
CALAMITY FUNDS
CEBU CITY, Cebu (PIA) – Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia reminded mayors here to use their calamity funds and open their National Food Authority (NFA) credit as part of their disaster preparations as strong typhoon "Pablo" is expected to hit the southern part of the province this evening. “Capitol is ready to help local government units anytime but they are the first line of responders so we will just augment their needs," Garcia told members of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) during a PDRRMC meeting Tuesday.
CAREER EXPO
DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental (PIA) – Over 300 job applicants showed up the career expo organized by the Philippine Call Center Institute (PCCI) in partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) recently. PCCI business development officer Victor Evangelista said some 50 job applicants were hired on the spot. The expo was the first anniversary celebration of PCCI participated in by business processing outsourcing (BPOs), the Transcom, Sitel, Qualfon, Teletech, SPI Global and Aegis held here.
