BRIGHT PUPILS
KALIBO, Aklan (PIA6) – Seven graduating elementary pupils here passed this year’s National Competitive Examination of the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) System last Sept. 29, 2012 at the Northwestern Visayan Colleges (NVC). Four pupils – Lady Yzabelle T. Biray, Rya Zenilde T. Cawaling, Angelica Shalene T. Estera and Allyzza T. Mationg were from the Aklan Learning Center (ALC), while Samantha Lauren E. Alvarez was the lone passer from Wadeford School and two, Martin James Caneda and Sophia Therese L. Pamatian were from the Kalibo Pilot Elementary School. They will enjoy a high school scholarship next school year at any Philippine Science High School campus in the country, with emphasis on science subjects with the end view of preparing them for Science and Technology-related careers.

TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte (PIA) – The Department of Public Works and Highways-Leyte Fourth Engineering District engineer Lino Francisco C. Gonzalez has recommended the repair of the deteriorating Bacan flood control bridge structure to prevent further damage. The P1.426-million Bacan Flood Control project contracted to GMP Builders at the Ormoc-Baybay-Southern Leyte Boundary road started in Aug. 9, 2012 is complete and work has now started on the construction, rehabilitation, and improvement of the Libungao-Matag-ob road along Barangays Camdelaria- Malazarte-Sta. Rosa-Libertad.

CEBU CITY, Cebu – The Region 7 office of the Home the Home Development Mutual Fund (Pag-IBIG Fund) will again sponsor its “Kasalang Bayan (free mass civil wedding ceremony)” project benefiting a maximum of 300 Pag-IBIG Fund members and couples on Valentines Day, February 14 this year. LIFEGUARD TRAINING
TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol (PIA) – For Bohol to be competitive in the tourism industry, there is need to have trained lifeguards in resort facilities that have pools or open water swimming facilities, members of the Bohol Tourism Council said. “Lifeguards keep swimmers safe,” a BTC member pointed out. Philippine Red Cross (PRC)-Bohol, thus, held a five-day Basic Water Safety and Rescue Lifeguard Training which started last Monday, and will go on until Friday, February 1 at the Crystal-E College in Tawala, Panglao Island. The course was opened to aspiring lifeguards and water rescuers who are physically fit, has swimming skills and have undergone PRC standard first aid training.
OPLAN TUBIG
ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PNA) – Over 60,000 residents here were served by the city government through the latter’s Oplan Tubig (Operation Plan Water) since the first week of January this year. “Oplan Tubig” was initiated by the city government after the city was declared under a state of calamity by the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) in December, 2012 due to water shortage. Some 50 to 60 barangays in the city’s coastal barangays and waterfront area were severely affected by the lack of water.
