ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PNA) — To ensure raising the level of awareness and appreciation for the arts among Ilonggos UP Visayas (UPV) recently opened "Kwadro Ilonggo," an exhibit running until February 28 featuring a collection of paintings, drawings, sculptures and conceptual art work by Iloilo artists. The name of the exhibit is derived from “kwadro,” which is Ilonggo for frame, symbolizing canvas. Painter and professor Roman C. Sanares said the art exhibit, ongoing at the UPV Art Gallery, was organized by the UPV Chancellor's Committee on Culture and the Arts in celebration of National Arts Month.
VALENTINE'S WEDDING
MANDAUE CITY, Cebu — Over 100 couples will tie the knot on Valentine's Day this Thursday, Feb. 14, in a mass free civil wedding ceremony sponsored by the Home Development Mutual Fund (Pag-IBIG)-Cebu. Dubbed “I Do, I Do! Araw ng Pag-IBIG, the event will be held at the J. Center Mall here at 10 a.m. The free civil wedding is open to all Pag-IBIG Fund members who are single or unmarried couples, 23 years old and above and have been living together for at least five years. The couples will be given free wedding rings, flowers for the bride, free photos, and souvenirs and will join a lottery for a foreclosed property or new property and a “Kabuhayan” showcase raffled during the reception. ROXAS CITY, Capiz (PIA) — The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Capiz has passed Ordinance No. 007, authored by Sangguniang Kabataan Provincial Federation President and Ex-Officio Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Zoe Maria Felipe Herrera, declaring April 22 of every year as Earth Day in Capiz. Herrera said the ordinance shall remind residents of their responsibilities to take care of the environment amid the threat of global warming brought about by the effects of solid waste generation, air and water pollution, mining and illegal logging, among others. She also said the ordinance heeds the call of President Aquino for a public-private partnership for the protection and preservation of the environment .

MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte (PIA) — The Population Commission (Popcom)-Southern Leyte office and St. Bernard local government unit will join the launch of the State of the Philippine Population Report (SPPR) 5 on February 12 in Tacloban City. Titled “Seeking a Healthy Balance: Population, Health and Environment Integration,” the SPPR 5 incorporates population, health and environment interrelationships and the country’s in integrating issues in policies, programs and projects. One of the guest speakers, St. Bernard Vice Mayor Rachel Abendula, will share the Guisaugon experience, pertinent to the SPPR5.

MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte (PIA) — The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Southern Leyte is initiating the acquisition of a P500,000 decorticating machine to boost businesses engaged in coco coir, an industry that involves the transforming of coconut husks from plain farm wastes into sturdy ropes used for soil conservation and other practical uses. The machine, to be bought by the DTI under its Shared Service Facility (SSF) program, enables easy churning of coco husks to produce coco coir.
