BUTUAN CITY — Officials of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) disclosed Thursday that the construction of more power projects will stabilize the electricity-starved country’s second largest island of Mindanao.
In a press briefing with newsmen at the Inland Resort Hotel and Convention center here, the NGCP officials laid down the agency’s transmission development plan, the overview of the Mindanao grid, Mindanao grid system development and the Mindanao power projects.
The NGCP officials led by its spokesperson and advisor for external affairs Lawyer Cynthia Perez-Alabanza disclosed that additional power sources such as the 15mW MEGC Diesel Plant in Lanao and the 35mW Bukidnon BioMass and other power plants that set to rise in Agusan del Norte are big plus factors to Mindanao grid.
They said the rise of 50mW Mindanao lll GEO, the 200mW STEAG Exp., 300mW APC Coal Plant, 20mW Tagoloan Hydro Plant, 35mW Darong Solar Plant, 27.5mW Minergy, 8mW Cabulig Mini-Hydro are great supporters to the Mindanao grid.
Most of these power plants are set to operate in the year 2015.
“These Mindanao power generation programs and our upgrading of transmission lines are seen to stabilize the Mindanao grid in the coming years,” declared Ms. Alabanza.
Meanwhile, the multi-million projects of the Aboitiz Power Corp. in Mindanao are also set commence and will also surely create the much needed power for the electricity-starved island in more than 2 years from now, it was learned.
The said power firm is completing the Php 35 billion worth of projects, which can supply more than 300 megawatts of much needed power in the Southern island.
The said power firm is constructing 300-mW coal-fired facility in the Southern part of Davao City.
In a statement, the Aboitiz has close to 1,000 workers and many more skilled workers that will be deployed in their construction sites in an objective to hit their timeline for the energization of the said power plant.
On the other hand, the Mapalad Power Corp. (MPC), is also set to operate the 100mW diesel plant in Iligan City which can massively contribute to the Mindanao grid.
According to latest report the MPC was recently given the nod by the government to operate the Iligan Diesel Power Plant to alleviate the Mindanao power crisis.
