Seafarers write to Aquino complaining about Marina
February 3, 2014
A group of Filipino seafarers is calling on President Benigno Aquino III to make it easier for them to secure certificates and documents from the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina).
Speaking on behalf of 350,000 Filipino seamen deployed in various foreign ships around the world, the United Filipino Seafarers (UFS) led by its president Nelson Ramirez complained about difficulties when transacting with Marina.
Ramirez said that they have been constantly receiving reports of “mulcting and efforts to force our members seafarers to come across in exchange for documents issued by Marina.”
In a two-page letter to the President through the Office of Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa, the UFS complained that “it takes us so much effort and waiting time just to secure our certificate of competency.” (Raymund F. Antonio)
