The semifinals of the Shakey’s V-League kick off today with National University battling University of Santo Tomas at 4 p.m. at the Arena in San Juan. The other match at 2 p.m. pits Adamson against Far Eastern University.  The Lady Bulldogs will be entering their best of three affair against the Golden Tigresses on a romp as they have ran through opposition in the quarterfinals, winning against Arellano and College of St. Benilde in the straight sets respectively. • CASTRO LEADS B.P.C.

Talk ’N Text teammates Jayson Castro and Ranidel de Ocampo are in a close battle for Best Player of the Conference (BPC) but one man who has enjoyed a resurgence on his career this conference may topple the two Tropang Texters for the top individual award in this tournament. Castro and de Ocampo finished 1-2 at the end of the semifinal round in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup in the Statistical Points (SPs) race, but not far behind is Air21’s veteran center Asi Taulava, who – at 41 years old – managed to land at No. 4 in the BPC derby. The 5-foot-11 Castro, a former BPC winner in the Philippine Cup last season, leads the contenders with an average SP of 30.4, followed by the 6-foot-5 de Ocampo, who is eyeing his first BPC, with 30.3 SP. Through 13 games, Castro averaged 13.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists, while de Ocampo had 15.6 points and 4.2 rebounds. The 6-foot-10 Taulava, on the other hand, actually ranked fourth after the semis, with 29.3 SP average although he had the most SPs earned with 408. He nearly led the Express to the finals but his team lost to San Mig Super Coffee in Game 5 of their semifinal series. Taulava, who won his first and only BPC during the 2003 All-Filipino Conference – the year he won the MVP plum – averaged 14.4 points, 10.7 rebounds and 1.1 assist this conference. Ahead of Taulava at third spot is San Miguel Beer’s sophomore June Mar Fajardo with 29.8 SPs.

MERCEDES TROPHY

The MercedesTrophy Philippine Final tees off on May 12 at the Sta. Elena Golf and Country Club in Cabuyao, Laguna. An already filled up roster of 216 participants have signed up for this ninth edition, organized by CATS Motors Inc., ensuring another full field as the tournament gears up for its first successful decade in 2015. They will be even more excited as lucky ace makers could bring home a spanking new Mercedes-Benz CLS 350 car, a Canon 6D DSLR camera with 24-105mm lens, or a TW Steel watch at the designated par-3 holes. Coinciding with the country leg, sponsored by Makati Shangri-La, Pilipinas Shell, PLDT Alpha, QBE Seaboard Insurance, and TW Steel, is the silver anniversary of the worldwide MercedesTrophy of Mercedes-Benz. And because it is the 25th year of the most prestigious golf tournament in the automotive world, winners last year can join the already filled up roster of 216 Mercedes-Benz owners and guests competing. This gives former winners another shot at the Asian Final in Australia in August.“The exemption is for this year only, as part of the celebration,” said CATS Motors president Felix Ang, who with chairman Greg Yu, will lead the opening ceremony.
