Ultimate catfight flick ‘Kung Fu Divas’ opens today
“Kung Fu Divas” which teams up two box office queens from the two rival TV networks, Ai Ai delas Alas and Marian Rivera, and which opens today, Oct. 2, in theaters nationwide, has been described by the director, Onat Diaz, as the “ultimate catfight movie.”
Direk Onat said, “This is the ultimate catfight movie without the usual sampalan, murahan from two women na nag-aaway. Gusto ko mag-kung fu-han talaga sila.
“(And) in order for this film to be viable, kailangan sobrang better-than-life hindi lang ng characters kundi pati actress na piniling gumanap nito. At alam naman natin kung gaano ka-better than life si Ms. Ai Ai and Ms. Marian. Pareho kasi silang reyna in their own rights. Perfect na perfect sila for the role of kung fu divas. Kung hindi sila um-oo sa akin, hindi ko itutuloy ang pelikula.”
The director added that it was easy convincing the two. “Isang kuwento ko lang kay Ms. Ai Ai, oo na siya agad. Excited siya na gawin ang pelikula kahit alam niya na mahirap gawin. Si Ms. Marian, ganun din. Hindi sila mahirap pagsamahin.”
“Kung Fu Divas” is Direk Onat’s first movie but he is a noted commercial director and he also directs the toprating ABS-CBN Sunday showbiz talk show “The Buzz.” About his debut film, he said, “May kalakihan ang budget but more than that, mas ipagyayabang ko ’yung amount of talent and amount of dedication ng lahat ng taong involved sa pelikula.”
“Kung Fu Divas” is a milestone movie for both Ai Ai and Marian who are also the movie’s co-producers. They are proud of the product, and Ai Ai believes all Filipinos will feel same way after watching it “kasi kaya pala nating gumawa ng ganitong pelikula.”
Ai Ai considers the movie as “isa sa mga pinaka-mahirap na pelikulang nagawa ko – acting-wise and action-wise. Nag-training din kami dito for martial arts (under an expert from Mainland China). Mahirap, pero sa ganda ng pelikula, sulit ’yung hirap at pagod namin. Fulfilled na fulfilled ako and I’m sure ganun din si Marian.”
“Kung Fu Divas,” touted to be this year’s funniest epic comedy-adventure film, is part of Star Cinema’s ongoing 20th anniversary celebration. It is co-produced by Reality Entertainment and O & Co. Picture Company.

What’s Next For Rafael Rosell
Rafael Rosell has proven his acting mettle via the drama shows the Kapuso Network assigns to him. These include “Temptation of Wife” co-starring Dennis Trillo and Marian Rivera, and “Maghihintay Pa Rin,” that paired him with Bianca King.
So what’s next for the actor? It seems things are still being lined-up for Rafael. In the meantime, he is busy with his endorsement projects, among them Nisce Skin ’n Face’s Blaise Skin Care for men product line.
Traditionally, women are the ones conscious about their skin, but now even men take good care of their skin since they too experience skin problems, especially for actors like Rafael who work under the glaring light of TV or movie cameras.
Rafael says, “I enjoy using Blaise skin care products because they concentrate on men’s basic skin care to keep masculine charm – from cleansing to toning. Less oily, sa set napapansin nila madali akong makeup-an. Hindi na kailangang mag-retouch lagi. The blemishes, mas konti, at nag-lighten.”
