China Tunnel Death Reaches 31
Beijing (AP) – Chinese state media reported that the death toll from a “little-reported” road explosion has risen to 31 – nearly two weeks after the blast shook a highway tunnel in northwestern China. The official Xinhua News Agency, however, did not explain the jump in death toll from an early report of 13 but said an ad-hoc investigation team convened Thursday when it revealed the latest death toll. The news report came after China concluded its annual meeting of its ceremonial congress in Beijing, raising questions if the information was kept under wraps to avoid disruption to the convention.
Taylor Swift Is 2013 Top-Earner
Los Angeles (DPA) – Country star Taylor Swift was the top-earning musician in 2013, pulling in $39.7-million from sales of her fourth studio album, and a successful world tour, according to Billboard magazine Wednesday. Swift, 24, edged out other industry heavyweights like Kenny Chesney, who earned $33-million, and Justin Timberlake, who earned $31.5-million. Rock veterans Bon Jovi and The Rolling Stones followed with earnings of $29-million and $26-million, respectively, while Beyonce was in sixth spot on Billboard’s list with a $24.4-million payday.
