Most NCR construction projects inspected by DOLE violate occupational safety standard

Most of the construction projects in Metro Manila have failed to comply with the occupational safety and health (OSH) standard, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said.

Out of the 95 construction projects inspected by the DOLE in the National Capital Region (NCR) from Aug. 1 to 15, it said 52 of them were found to have violations.

Top breaches include failing to submit or having no copies of the Construction Safety and Health Program at work, as well as having insufficient or no designated OSH staff such as safety officers and first responders.

Other violations are absence of a safety and health committee, the failure to provide workers with personal protective equipment (PPE), and the insufficient or incorrect usage of PPE.

The 20 construction sites with PPE violations are instructed to make the necessary corrections immediately.

In addition, an authority to monitor will be issued immediately for a complete inspection of the said sites, while the remaining sites will be continuously monitored by the team.

Meanwhile, the labor department reminded construction sites to comply with OSH standards to ensure the safety of everyone on the site.

DOLE also noted that catastrophic accidents may lead to disability, serious diseases, or even death if no preventive control measures are in place. (Nicole Magmanlac)
