Duterte to new DOJ chief: Do what is right

By Jeffrey Damicog President Duterte told newly appointed Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra to do just one thing and that’s do things right. "The President’s sole instruction to me: do what is right," the former senior deputy executive secretary bared in a text message.

(ACE MORANDANTE/PRESIDENTIAL PHOTO / MANILA BULLETIN) Guevarra was appointed to the post after Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre handed in his resignation letter to Malacañang. After Duterte accepted Aguirre’s resignation, Gueverra immediately took his oath of office on yesterday. Aguirre’s resignation came after weeks of speculation that there will be a revamp in Duterte’s Cabinet after the President said he is not any more satisfied with the performance of some of his Cabinet officials. Aguirre and Duterte were members of the Lex Taleonis Fraternity at the San Beda College. Aside from being senior deputy executive secretary, Guevarra had been appointed as member of the 2010 Philippine Truth Commission, deputy executive secretary for legal affairs at the Office of the President in May 2015, and commissioner of the Philippine Competition Commission in February 2016. Guevarra graduated from the Ateneo School of Law and placed second in the 1985 bar examinations. He has been part of a well-known law firm in Makati before forming his own law partnership in 1990. Until April 2015, Guevarra was in-active private law practice and faculty member of the Ateneo School of Law.
